Second in my We Come From the North mix series. Since my WRVU Scandinavian music hour radio show is still on hiatus this season (and I have a longstanding obsession with music from northern Europe), I'm constantly restructuring alot of my catalog and playlists, and making mixes for myself and close friends.. That being said, I thought I'd continue to share the nordic love.

(Listen to in the car or with headphones or with some really, really good stereo speakers. Also to note, the cover photograph: via good friend Blake, who just returned from travels in Iceland.)

    Flood Pt. 1
Rolf Klausner of The Acorn, Exit/In. Nashville.

    a few things:
  • I'm meeting up with Rolf (above) tonight for some headshots and Q&A regarding his songwriting and The Acorn before their show with Calexico at Mercy Lounge. I've loved their music for a while now, but have their earlier Tin Fist EP has really been the soundtrack of recent days. In other news, this will be my second writing piece for American Songwriter. It's nice to break from doing the art every once in a while and actually get to ask the questions to the musicians I deem necessary. D. Jurado was last time, D. Witmer is next week. Pumped.
  • My sister was in town Saturday night. Among things that we did include: dinner with Colleen at Jackson's then Yazoo Brewery's 5th Anniversary party.. It was a beautifully cold night huddled around heaters in the belly of the old Marathon factory. We then went to see The Protomen, which might have been the most epic performance I've seen of them yet. Then we went down to lower Broadway and danced at Robert's, and then at Layla's, and then went to East Nashville to visit the tacotruck and friends and then went back home to sleep 'round 3 am. Tiring, but fun.
  • The magazine's in deadline for the next issue already. Set to go to press before Thanksgiving, lets see if I survive the next two weeks.
  • I'm surviving on the most minimal of cash this week. Thanks college loans!
  • I like taking early morning walks. Downtown syline covered in fog, and the air is biting. I love it.

    back to work.

VA- We Come From the North Vol. 1

A message board I'm a part of with some pals started a thread focusing on music from specific countries.. Since my Scandinavian music hour radio show is on hiatus currently (and I have a longstanding obsession with music from northern Europe), I've been restructuring alot of my catalog and playlists, finally making a first mix to share. Obviously, Scandinavia isn't a country, but I didn't want to limit it to just one this time around. It seems a bit more cohesive to include all Nordic principalities.. So, this is the beginning of the series, and leans heavily on the Swedes, with a bit of Icelandic and Danish..

(Listen to in the car or with headphones or with some really, really good stereo speakers.)

    Track Listing:

    1. Ass – It Only Takes Minutes (Stockholm, SE)
    2. Efterklang – Mirador (Cøpenhagen, DK)
    3. Peter Bjorn and JohnInland Empire (Stockholm, SE)
    4. Loney, Dear – Airport Surroundings (Jönköping/Stockholm, SE)
    5. Seabear – Libraries (Reykjavík, IE)
    6. Boy Omega – Quest for Fire (Stockholm, SE)
    7. Jong Pang – Small Cut Sensations (Cøpenhagen, DK)
    8. The Mary Onettes – Slow (Göteborg, SE)
    9. Detektivbyrån – Nattöppet (Malmö, SE)
    10. Acid House Kings – That’s Because You Drive Me (Stockholm, SE)
    11. Sin Fang Bous – Catch the Light (Reykjavík, IE)
    12. Tafra – Oh Daniel (Stockholm, SE/Hrvatska, CR)
    13. Thomas Denver Jonsson & The September Sunrise – First In Line (Malmö/Grums, SE)
    14. Jon Eimre & Bra Folk – Stråklåten (Stockholm, SE)
    15. Jens Carelius – Along the Keys (Oslo, NO)
    16. Ólafur Arnalds - Himininn er ad hrynja (Reykjavík, IE)
    17. Múm – Dancing Behind My Eyelids (Reykjavík, IE)
    18. The Kissaway Trail – Smother + Evil = Hurt (Odense, DK)
    19. Riceboy Sleeps – All the Big Trees (Reykjavík, IE)
    20. Loney, Dear – Citadel Band (Jönköping/Stockholm, SE)
    21. The Knife – We Share Our Mother’s Health (Stockholm, SE)

    Party blur

    a few things:
  • Halloween was actually alot of fun. I was somewhat stressed at the thought of having people over after only a week or so of living in the new house, but our Spooky Spook party was jumpin', filled with friends old and new.. and Michelle Branch even. Yes, Michelle Branch. She was a friendly vampire.
  • Hung out post-party with some of my new favorite fellows, including M. Brandon Morgan. He's going to invest a tiny bit and share my studio space with me, once I'm unpacked and the like. It will be fun for him to be around the house.
  • Laid around the house yesterday, sleeping (recovering) and reading.. brunch with Nichole and co. at Jackson's.. she's in town from London til January, and I'm pleased she'll be around for a bit. Eveningtime led me to a meet up for drinks at 3 Crow with LT/Damon and co., which carried on til the 3 am closing time. While there, I visited with Ian and Cason for a bit, who were perched at a table drinkin' with John Prine. JOHN PRINE. I love Nashville.
  • Went hiking in the pretty hills of Percy Warner park this morning with Colleen, and enjoyed the gorgeous autumn day via the porch at Bongo Java and walks to Chelsey's and tonight, to Hillsboro Village, where I'm stealing the internet via Fidos.
  • Busy week ahead, including completion of my psychedelia-induced illustrated cover, inspired mainly from Cream's 1967 album cover of Disraeli Gears.
  • The new issue of American Songwriter hits the stands this week. The Killers are on the cover, and frankly, it's the purtiest one yet. Many thanks to Rae, who helped me out immensely as my right-hand design (wo)man.
  • This might be a bit pre-emptive to mention, but I'm having a hard time containing my excitement over a series of freelance projects I recently started working on.. pro bono in a sense, but I can wave that issue, since it's for Lewis Hollow and Jeremy Enigk. I've been having mini heartattacks every time I realize it. Furthermore, I'll be travelling to Seattle and NYC off and on from now til February, so heads up to you folks in those cities. More on this soon.

I'm going to head home and work on some art, y'all. Happy November.

    Joel and Andrew

I know MGMT is big and all that, and I'm gonna namedrop, but I can't help but be like a proud mother hen for Andrew VW. They're on the cover of SPIN this month. And here I am at work, my memory harkening back to the days of youth. Skipping school while our perscription drugged teachers napped, making sweet jams on fruityloops, banging on closeted pianos found in empty hallways, and comparing mashup creations in the parking lots. Doing this repeatedly, and often, was the sum of my last years of Memphis.

Let me boast he's got an offkiltered brain for things and I'm just glad he's being recognized.
Along with Dan, Carly, Lisa, Lucy.. I'm thankful for subversive and staggeringly creative friends of yore that have made me stay consistently tanglyhaired and weird.

Andrew's just one in a basketful. I'm incredibly proud of all my old friends, and I live vicariously through them and their accomplishments.

Inspired to finish one and move to another, I am indirectly thankful to the rain, to seclusion and cool air, to crosscountry conversations, and an assuming mp3 recorder workhorse.. I'm finally getting out these silent films in my head. New song: Silver Lining. Listen if you have nothing else to hear at the moment.

    A few things, in bulletpoints:

  • Finished American Songwriter issue 23 # 6 on Monday, featuring Jackson Browne (photograph by Frank Okenfels), Old Crow Medicine Show, Beck, The Felice Brothers, Dr. Dog.. among others. In other news, I have Mono, I think. Not kidding. This was like old school production schedule (i.e. too much stress). I barely made it out alive.
  • Say Hi (formerly Say Hi To Your Mom) has a photograph of mine as their current profile image on their myspace page, taken at a show in Austin.
  • I've booked a flight for Richmond/DC for the end of this month to visit my sister, and we're hopefully heading to Charlottesville for a night to see familiar faces and shake some hands.
  • New York, Halloween weekend, also set. I might resurrect the Circulatory System costume of '06, from the last outofcontrol halloween spent in the city. Memories here.
  • We Own This Town is my new favorite reference page for local music in town, thanks to the hard work of Michael from what Doug from the Clutters had originally created. I encourage you to check this site out, especially for the weekly podcasts of what music city has to offer. Also, in the same vein, Out the Other. Great Nashville music blog.
  • I've seen some great shows recently. The WOMAN fellows were in town from Knoxville two weekends ago, and they put on a pretty great show. I saw The Howlies from Atlanta at the Springwater two Sundays ago.. Charlie and Ian (Detachment Kit) and co. were in town from Brooklyn, playing with their side project The Good Gospel Truth, playing to a packed house at The Basement this past Friday. Coming up: The Felice Brothers next week, Danger Bear Obama benefit show, and My Morning Jacket this Friday on the riverfront. It will be a nice evening, I'm sure.
  • Last weekend was Tomato Arts fest in East Nashville. This is only noteworthy because I stopped by The Groove recordshop and bought the Rachel's Sea and the Bells album finally on vinyl, as well as the Smog A River Ain't Too Much to Love album. I then proceeded to drive home and listen to Smog for a few hours while laying on the couch and doing absolutely nothing.
  • Went to Burgess Falls on Sunday (again), this time with Colleen, Chelsey, and new friend Sarah. Lots of hikin', swimmin', loungin'. Perfect Sunday.
  • Biomusicology has two weeks left, counting tonight (WRVU 91.1 6-8 pm). I have my own show starting in September.
  • Back to work.. and by "work" I mean reading blogz.

Drawing for Argyle Gallery [10 Jul 2008|02:14pm]
I love everything Ray Fenwick does. He's been my top hero for the past year now.

In other news, my sister just was named Tennessee's Art Teacher of the Year. Pretty sweet, and of course I'm incredibly proud of her.

Will Oldham's "Raining in Darling" just came on my shuffle, followed by Denison Witmer's "Ringing of the Belltower". Perfect.

Can you hear the ringing of the bell tower?
    Counting off the days we can't replace;
I would like to think it's not that way.
All the songs that find you in the city,
Pull you from your bedroom to the streets,
    Pushing all your sadness underneath.

    There's a song I've been singing,
All these years as they pass,
There's a lot of big questions I never ask,
There's a lot of questions never asked.

I'm part of a nice little message board with some friends, and recently we set to task at creating a nice 1970s mix. I chose 1971 (pretty much because Paul McCartney's Ram came out that year). I quickly realized that this was possibly one of the best years of music in recent history. Though it was hard to narrow down the song choices, I feel comfortable in saying that these were the ones I kept coming back to... Thus here is my mix, and you can download it here.

    1971 - A Talk Communal 1970s Mix

    1. Bill Withers - Grandma's Hands
    2. Cat Stevens - If You Want to Sing Out
    3. Led Zeppelin - Rock & Roll
    4. Paul McCartney - Monkberry Moon Delight
    5. Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - Love the One You're With
    6. The Byrds - So Fine
    7. John Lennon - Oh Yoko
    8. Neil Young (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young) - Ohio
    9. T. Rex - Hot Love
    10. Cat Stevens - The Wind
    11. Graham Nash - Simple Man
    12. Deep Purple - Anyone's Daughter
    13. Led Zeppelin - Going to California
    14. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Have You Ever Seen the Rain
    15. Rolling Stones - Wild Horses
    16. Bröselmaschine - Gedanken
    17. David Crosby - I'd Swear (There Was Somebody Here)

The cover art model is none other than my pretty mama, circa 1971.

    Toby, sleeping

    Toby, sleeping. Knoxville.

I went to Knoxville this past weekend, on a whim and a post-work sudden urge to not head home. My sister played a show sans band at the Pilot Light- opening for Guest House (Akron, OH band), following another local band called Crabs are Scavengers. As always, I love my weekends there. Old faces, bike rides, the looming Appalachians, quiet rainshowers in the early morning and late afternoon, the moorish feeling of lowlying fog at dawn.. Old buildings and warehouses and cobblestone streets downtown. I love that everyone bikes everywhere, and that, post-party, Holly moved the party of friends to her house and frontyard- cycles propped under trees and lying on the front steps and sidewalk.. Dogs running around, legs hanging of the porch, bantering conversations, music coming through the screen from the record player.. Going to bed with the sound of morning birdsong, and waking up to sunlight streaming in. I glanced out Holly's bedroom window when I awoke and saw a powwow of sleeping bags on the front porch- it had been such a cool evening, it was nicer outside than sleeping with the airflow within Holly's old creaky house.
Saturday, Damion came over and we went to a late lunch, followed by many lazy hours recovering from the night before, watching old movies and drifting in and out of sleep til late.. then after a quick brushing of hair and change of clothes, heading back to the old city for drinks and to dance to Sarah's spinning of records at the World Grotto til the early morning (again).
    ...
On the way back home on Sunday, I took a detour and drove through the countryside outside of Cookeville, and went on a little exploration venture. I found Burgess Falls and took a long hike by myself, and just was overwhelmed with how pretty everything was. It was so incredibly hot outside, though luckily most of the trail was under much of the tree canopy- There were swimmers at the last (and the largest) of the falls, and I wanted desperately to jump in to cool off. I didn't, though I think I'm taking off work on Thursday for the mere purpose of hiking and swimming. I'll probably head back that way since its only an hour away. And really, Burgess Falls is gorgeous.

A few things to look at this week:

  • I really would like to see Mongol. It's playing at the Belcourt, and well, the trailer teased me well.
  • Bombadil is playing tomorrow night at Exit/In. I might go, though last time I went to a bill there (with Darla Farmer opening) on a weeknight, I was one of 12 concert goers. It was the Acorn! I thought they would draw more, though they were competing with Destroyer at Mercy Lounge the same night, and it was right after SxSW.
  • 2-for-1 at 3 Crow. I want this to become a weekly thing. I've stumbled upon a nice little startup friendship with some lovely, crafty, and scrappy ladies on the east side of the river. I love it.. I was feeling stifled for a while. I feel like everyone's been too busy just to hang, without any other obligations that might deter from such.
  • I have my weekly radio show, Biomusicology with Devin, as always, tomorrow night from 6 til 8. WRVU 91.1. I promise less awkward transitions and more seamless playtime. Smile.
  • Nick sent me photographs from his band (Giant Tigers)'s show with Monotonix at J.J.'s Bohemia last week in Chattanooga. Out of control. I'm talking drum sets on fire, eardrum ringing, brokenteeth out of control (he said he broke 6. geez). All that to say, they're playing on the 4th, and since I have no set plans for the day off, I might skip down there for the evening to see pals and have a good time.
  • Back to Nashville on the 5th, however, because my dear pal Daniel is gettin' married.
  • I'm doing an illustration for Matthew Smith, to carry on the same look as his series of road EPs he's doing.. I did the first one last fall.
  • Getting closer to having some studio space I think. Details soon. This will free me up so much! I think I could actually finish some things then.
  • Heading to Memphis next weekend for Nina's birthday gathering and MGMT's homecoming visit. I'm excited all around for some time with my family and friends back there.
  • Some good shows coming up in the next few months: Grizzly Bear, Felice Brothers, Bill Callahan, Iron & Wine, mf-ing SPIRITUALIZED, Bon Iver, Squeeze.. I'm trying to get up to NYC in September to go to ATP.. My Bloody Valentine would be the end-all I think; plus older sister Amy and Caleb will be there. It gives me an excuse to see them, and meet up with old childhood best friend Stephanie. We recently reconnected through the wonders of myspace and facebook, and I think we're still one in the same. I'd love to see her sooner than later.
  • I've begun to set aside money for Finland/Sweden/Norway/FaroeIslands/Iceland trip of '09. I might wipe myself out with this one... It sounds lofty, but I'm going completely budget. Staying with friends, using pretty much all my vacation time, travelling by car and bike and boat.. I'd also like to book some shows with Thomas and play around Sweden and Denmark and Norway. This is all very not impossible. If I plan it, I think it could come to fruition. Anyone want to jump on board? The more, the merrier.

  • All in all, things steadily approaching that I can look forward to. I'm coming up on my THREE years with the magazine, and it just makes me realize time moves so incredibly fast. I've remained single (wellll, for the most part), I'm still restless, I'm still trying to figure things out. I guess that's life.

Had my third installment of Biomusicology radio show with Devin last night (as it is every Wednesday night, from 6 to 8 pm.. tune into WRVU 91.1 if you are in the metropolitan Nashville area..) We had quite a few callers and requests, a tribute to George Carlin, and few local rotations with De Novo Dahl and The Privates. A few things I was glad I could get it were the Mary Onettes (of course), Bombadil, The Little Ones, and Sonic Youth's "Incinerate" was a perfect near-ending. I'm glad I've gone this route via a side-project of sorts. It's been quite a bit of fun so far.. If you'd like to hear a streaming broadcast of last night's show, click here . Or just tune in your radio next week on your drive home from work.

    BIOMUSICOLOGY, June 25, 2008 playlist:

    The Mary Onettes - Lost
    The Smiths - Ask

So what if I responded to this on CraigsList? It's late and I'm kinda lonely from hours spent on Wikipedia and I want to see Ira. I was in this same situation when I thought it would be good to buy an extra ticket for the Sigur Ros Valentines show last year.. surely I'd have a (boy)friend to go with. (But noooo, intersecting planes did not occur for me either). All of the good boys aren't within proximity, it seems. Oh, cruel fate. Your indifference to my romanticism is starting to piss me off.

In other news, Matt, co-worker, surprised me with the vinyl of Lie Down in the Light as a late birthday present. I will be listening to it and laying on my bed all weekend as I try to stay cool in this ovenbox of an apartment.

Death Carried on the Back of the Innocent- Ben Kehoe

Just received the print I ordered from Ben Kehoe's Tiny Showcase debut. I'm going to frame it's little bitty creepy cuteness and hang it on my bathroom wall. He has some other fantastic paintings and prints on his website, all of which I pretty much want to own and hang on my wall.

My weekend was good.. Your typical memorial day extended weekend filled with sunburn, cookouts, and mosquito bites. Tennessee's humidity is coming in full vengeance, I can already feel it. My hatchshow prints are peeling off my kitchen walls.

Old pal Jonny Corndawg was in town Saturday- A group of us, after Joe's cookout, went to the show at the Springwater to see him play. It turned into a grand time, playing pool and drinkin' ponies. Caitlin Rose sang the last song of his set with him, and everyone was stomping their heels.

I started my WRVU training this weekend as well. I'll be assisting/co-hosting/programing until I have my own radio show hopefully by the end of the summer, early fall. I'm hoping for a good time, like after work or lunchtime. Cross your fingers.

Our desires to go float down rivers on Monday were thwarted due to rain and thunder. This will commence, however, alot this summer. Lucy and I are taking kayaking courses at the Nantahala in July on the weekends- this gives me a bit to look forward to..

Other things coming up: Birthdays, weddings, cookouts, art and music shows. Going to the mountains via Asheville and Knoxville this weekend for Durango Festival (for work) and to visit my sister and her new puppy. Memphis the next weekend for a big birthday gathering for my grandmother's 85th. Finishing up my drawing for Jeremy's lil art show in Portland. Trying to find an art space soon, hopefully, to spread out. Brigadiers playing the Bobbie's Dairy Dip blockparty in late June. Recording homespun EP in July/August with some cohorts. Hopefully a few trips including New York, to partake in Coney Island's Astroland's last summer of operation.

    More to come..

Sweet Lord in heaven, how excited was I to find the baby blue Bonnie "Prince" Billy's Lie Down in Light cd package on my desk this morning. Not only is it FRIDAY, but Mary Onettes is tonight, and Will Oldham will coo me now part of the drive up to Indianapolis. Also, 12th south arts festival is tomorrow, and Josh's birthday cookout and Rollerderby and Laura Viers show and Aaron Robbs will be here and Coral Castles at the 5 Spot and Symphony in the park and maybe some honkytonkin' even. I need to dust off my boots.

I'm in a good mood, y'all. Hot damn.
