Toby, sleeping

Toby, sleeping. Knoxville.

I went to Knoxville this past weekend, on a whim and a post-work sudden urge to not head home. My sister played a show sans band at the Pilot Light- opening for Guest House (Akron, OH band), following another local band called Crabs are Scavengers. As always, I love my weekends there. Old faces, bike rides, the looming Appalachians, quiet rainshowers in the early morning and late afternoon, the moorish feeling of lowlying fog at dawn.. Old buildings and warehouses and cobblestone streets downtown. I love that everyone bikes everywhere, and that, post-party, Holly moved the party of friends to her house and frontyard- cycles propped under trees and lying on the front steps and sidewalk.. Dogs running around, legs hanging of the porch, bantering conversations, music coming through the screen from the record player.. Going to bed with the sound of morning birdsong, and waking up to sunlight streaming in. I glanced out Holly's bedroom window when I awoke and saw a powwow of sleeping bags on the front porch- it had been such a cool evening, it was nicer outside than sleeping with the airflow within Holly's old creaky house.
Saturday, Damion came over and we went to a late lunch, followed by many lazy hours recovering from the night before, watching old movies and drifting in and out of sleep til late.. then after a quick brushing of hair and change of clothes, heading back to the old city for drinks and to dance to Sarah's spinning of records at the World Grotto til the early morning (again).
...
On the way back home on Sunday, I took a detour and drove through the countryside outside of Cookeville, and went on a little exploration venture. I found Burgess Falls and took a long hike by myself, and just was overwhelmed with how pretty everything was. It was so incredibly hot outside, though luckily most of the trail was under much of the tree canopy- There were swimmers at the last (and the largest) of the falls, and I wanted desperately to jump in to cool off. I didn't, though I think I'm taking off work on Thursday for the mere purpose of hiking and swimming. I'll probably head back that way since its only an hour away. And really, Burgess Falls is gorgeous.

A few things to look at this week:

  • I really would like to see Mongol. It's playing at the Belcourt, and well, the trailer teased me well.
  • Bombadil is playing tomorrow night at Exit/In. I might go, though last time I went to a bill there (with Darla Farmer opening) on a weeknight, I was one of 12 concert goers. It was the Acorn! I thought they would draw more, though they were competing with Destroyer at Mercy Lounge the same night, and it was right after SxSW.
  • 2-for-1 at 3 Crow. I want this to become a weekly thing. I've stumbled upon a nice little startup friendship with some lovely, crafty, and scrappy ladies on the east side of the river. I love it.. I was feeling stifled for a while. I feel like everyone's been too busy just to hang, without any other obligations that might deter from such.
  • I have my weekly radio show, Biomusicology with Devin, as always, tomorrow night from 6 til 8. WRVU 91.1. I promise less awkward transitions and more seamless playtime. Smile.
  • Nick sent me photographs from his band (Giant Tigers)'s show with Monotonix at J.J.'s Bohemia last week in Chattanooga. Out of control. I'm talking drum sets on fire, eardrum ringing, brokenteeth out of control (he said he broke 6. geez). All that to say, they're playing on the 4th, and since I have no set plans for the day off, I might skip down there for the evening to see pals and have a good time.
  • Back to Nashville on the 5th, however, because my dear pal Daniel is gettin' married.
  • I'm doing an illustration for Matthew Smith, to carry on the same look as his series of road EPs he's doing.. I did the first one last fall.
  • Getting closer to having some studio space I think. Details soon. This will free me up so much! I think I could actually finish some things then.
  • Heading to Memphis next weekend for Nina's birthday gathering and MGMT's homecoming visit. I'm excited all around for some time with my family and friends back there.
  • Some good shows coming up in the next few months: Grizzly Bear, Felice Brothers, Bill Callahan, Iron & Wine, mf-ing SPIRITUALIZED, Bon Iver, Squeeze.. I'm trying to get up to NYC in September to go to ATP.. My Bloody Valentine would be the end-all I think; plus older sister Amy and Caleb will be there. It gives me an excuse to see them, and meet up with old childhood best friend Stephanie. We recently reconnected through the wonders of myspace and facebook, and I think we're still one in the same. I'd love to see her sooner than later.
  • I've begun to set aside money for Finland/Sweden/Norway/FaroeIslands/Iceland trip of '09. I might wipe myself out with this one... It sounds lofty, but I'm going completely budget. Staying with friends, using pretty much all my vacation time, travelling by car and bike and boat.. I'd also like to book some shows with Thomas and play around Sweden and Denmark and Norway. This is all very not impossible. If I plan it, I think it could come to fruition. Anyone want to jump on board? The more, the merrier.

  • All in all, things steadily approaching that I can look forward to. I'm coming up on my THREE years with the magazine, and it just makes me realize time moves so incredibly fast. I've remained single (wellll, for the most part), I'm still restless, I'm still trying to figure things out. I guess that's life.

You might as well hit Estonia while you're over there too. Ha!
